Can you share the blurb of your book with us?

Who is your favourite character and why?
The story is told in a first-person narrative, and it’s safe to say Evie’s my favourite. She’s from an aristocratic background, but surrounded by the conventions of the age she has an impulsive streak, and often exasperates her family by her friendliness with the staff and her tomboy attitude. Fond of cars and their workings, her talents are well-suited to joining the ambulance corps near the front lines in 1914, and as she leaves her privileged background behind her and throws herself into her new life, we see the fun-loving, practical-joker become a strong, capable young woman – faced with unthinkable choices – and yet, despite everything, she remains true to what she feels is important. I think she has depths even I haven’t plumbed yet!
Do you have a particular time you like to write?
I’m an early-bird whenever possible. If I have a day off (I work full-time) and I get started early enough, I can write all day. But if I have to delay, or put off my start, I find it very hard to clear my thoughts and crack on with it.
What are you reading?
I’m currently re-reading the George RR Martin series A Song of Ice and Fire. Getting a lot more out of it this time around, too. Loving it all over again.
Who is your favourite author?
Ouch! This is a really hard question! My two favourites are Diana Gabaldon and Stephen King, I think. Today, anyway!
If your book was made into a movie who’d play the main characters?
Oh, we can but dream! I think the perfect Evie (physically) would be Helen George, who played Trixie in Call The Midwife. As for Will, he started out with boyish good looks, which hardened over time, so possibly Daniel Radcliffe, or Orlando Bloom might fit the bill. Fun to think about!
What’s next for you writing wise?
I’ve just been given editorial revisions for the third/last in this series, luckily they’re light! I’m also working on my self-published series, The Lynher Mill Chronicles –the third book is due out next June. After that I’ll be going back to an Edwardian ghost story set in Cornwall, that I started a while ago.
Describe a typical writing day, do you have any rituals you use before starting?
I open all my documents, (book, notes, characters etc) get some toast and coffee … then I open Bejeweled Blitz! It’s a great little game to clear the mind, and usually once I’ve played a couple of rounds I’m ready to start writing. I don’t usually spend too long going over what I’ve written previously, unless I’d left it mid-scene, which I don’t tend to do. I just fix my mind on what needs to happen next, and get on with it. The rest can be sorted out later!

An interview with Aurelia B Rowl!
I’d like to welcome Carina author Aurelia B. Rowl to the blog today! She’s been super busy with a few projects of late and is here to discuss them with us! She’s also sharing an excerpt of her latest release! I can’t wait to read this book!
- Can you share the blurb of your book with us?
Sure, I’d love to! It’s not easy being the Queen Bee. Alice Taylor should know.
You know that girl. The one that the whole school’s social life seems to revolve around. Alice used to be that girl until she decided to quit sixth form college. Suddenly her ‘friends’ aren’t so interested in following her around and her attention-grabbing behaviour is about to get her kicked out of home. With nowhere to go and no one to turn to, her world starts spiralling seriously out of control.
Only new friend Zac Newton seems to believe in her. Lifeguard and poolside hottie, Zac is quite literally her lifesaver. But then, he’s never met ‘Malice’, her mean-girl alter ego, and Alice wants to keep it that way. She knows this is her last chance for a fresh start until her sordid past catches up with her at the worst possible moment.
As everything Alice has worked towards comes crashing down around her, she realises that the hardest thing of all is being yourself…
- Who is your favourite character and why?
Oh, that’s a tricky question.
There are so many recurring characters within the Popping the Cherry series that it’s impossible to pick just one. I love them all! Alice is such a wonderful character though, to have come through so much adversity already, but I also have a major crush on Zac and I want Nathan to be my best friend.
- Do you have a particular time you like to write?
I’m in the fortunate position of being able to write fill-time, or as full time as I can get with two young children, so I write whilst they’re at school and then pick up again in the evening once they’ve gone to bed. I try to take weekends off as ‘family time’ and I tend to do the bare minimum during school holidays to keep everything ticking over.
- What are you reading?
These days I tend to be more of a binge reader, particularly in the school holidays. I don’t have a current read at the moment but I have just finished Hard to Forget, a fabulous romantic suspense by Incy Black, and I will be picking up Kidnapping the Brazilian Tycoon by Carmen Falcone next. I am also slowly working through my fellow Carina authors’ titles that I’ve bought and downloaded to my kindle.
- Who is your favourite author?
Again, this is another really tricky question since it depends what kind of mood I’m in. Much like my taste in music, I like to read different genres from young adult fantasy, to romance, to crime and all sorts in between. If I had to choose a handful of authors as my favourites—my ‘go to’ authors—then it would be Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Rachel Caine, J.K. Rowling, Terry Pratchett and Tana French.
- If your book was made into a movie who’d play the main characters?
Ah, what a wonderful dream!
In all honesty, however, I wouldn’t have a clue; I’m not really up on my teen/young actors anymore and don’t tend to watch television. Since the main characters from Popping the Cherry also feature in A Girl Called Malice before all heading into book 3, I’d have my work cut out trying to cast them all.
- What’s next for you writing wise?
My next release is a contemporary romance, Christmas is Cancelled, and it will be out on December 1st. Christmas is Cancelled was actually my debut story, originally released December 2012, and it’s the first story I ever completed so I have a major soft spot for it. I am thrilled to have had the chance to go back in and strengthen the story, ready to be relaunched with Carina UK, and I hope to get the sequel out for Christmas 2015.
On the writing front, I am now in the research and plotting phase of book 3 from the Popping the Cherry series. It’s my first attempt at a gay romance story and I just know I’m going to have my work cut out keeping it authentic and not falling into the stereotype trap. Wish me luck!
- Describe a typical writing day, do you have any rituals you use before starting?
My typical writing day starts once I’ve dropped the kids off at school and fed our menagerie of rescue pets – 1 dog and 3 rabbits – then I make the coffee and fire up the laptop at the kitchen table. I do have an office out in the garage but I like being in the main house, unless I’m falling way off deadline or deep in revisions and need to focus without any distractions (i.e. the wi-fi signal doesn’t reach the garage o_O )
On days when I’m struggling over a plot point or having problems connecting key scenes, I will leave the car at school, pop in my earphones, and then walk the two miles home listening to loud music. I live in such a beautiful part of the UK – all rolling hills, trees and greenery – that it never fails to unlock my mind and get my inspiration flowing. Then there’s the two-mile walk back again to collect the kids after school so I’m working off some of my “writer’s ass” at the same time. Win-win!
- Where can we find your book?
At this time, all of my books are in digital format and can be found on most major ebook retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble/Nook, iBooks, and Kobo. I’m still dreaming of one day being able to walk into my local independent bookstore or Waterstones and find my books on the shelves as well as on the website. One day…
Ironically, my first book looking set to go to print is For One Night Only; a short story that I wrote more as a dare to see if I could write more ‘spicy’ romance, released under the alternate pen name of Allie A. Burrow. It will be part of a 2014 ‘Flirt’ compilation to be released January 2015 by Breathless Press.
- Where can we find you?
Um…more to the point; where can’t you find me? I’m a bit of an internet junkie so am on many—perhaps too many—social network sites. I tend to hang out on Facebook and Twitter the most though, and also Goodreads. I love connecting with readers and fellow writers so it’s a case of the more the merrier (which is a far too subtle hint for: come and befriend or follow me please).
Aurelia B. Rowl lives on the edge of the Peak District in the UK with her very understanding husband, their two fantastic children, and their mad rescue mutt who doesn’t mind being used as a sounding post and source of inspiration. She regularly wows them all with her curious, hastily thrown together meals when she gets too caught up with her latest writing project…or five!…and she has developed the fine art of ignoring the housework.

I pulled the bathroom door to behind me, leaving it ajar, then pressed my cool hand against my burning skin. With my chewing gum still in my bag on the bed, I had to raid the emergency nicotine supplies I kept hidden in a toiletry bag in my bathroom. A poor substitute for the real thing, but I could indulge in as many cigarettes as I wanted once Charlie was tucked up in bed. For now the gum would have to do so I popped two of the white tablets into my mouths and chewed, wincing at the movement. I took out my contacts before jumping under the blistering shower. Five minutes later, I was scrubbed free of makeup—along with all traces of Hayden—and as ready as I’d ever be to brave the world again. Charlie had stayed exactly where I’d left him, only he was now surrounded by sheets of sketch paper: drawings of hills, old cotton mills, and lots of pictures of him. He was so engrossed he didn’t notice me pottering around and getting dressed, so I squatted down beside him to see which drawing had held his attention for so long. Big mistake. ‘I like this one best,’ he said, holding up the pencil sketch of me and Mum. ‘Thanks.’ I wedged my hands behind my knees, trapping them against my calves to stop me from snatching the picture out of his fingers. ‘It’s you and Mummy, isn’t it? When you were little?’ ‘It sure is.’ I’d copied it from a photograph I’d found being used to prop up the wonky leg of our old table. Folded into a small square and badly damaged, it fell apart soon after I’d finished drawing my own copy. ‘Do you have any other sisters? Or brothers?’ he asked. ‘Or is it just Mummy?’ White lies like not knowing any Spanish were one thing but I couldn’t lie to him about the big stuff. Since it wasn’t my place to tell him the truth, it left me stuck in an awkward limbo. I must have made some kind of weird sound because Charlie turned his head to look at me. ‘Are you OK, Aunty Alice?’ ‘Me? Yeah, of course I am!’ ‘But you’re crying?’ I am? ‘No, no, I’m not crying.’ I freed a hand from my behind my knees and wiped my fingertips across my cheek. Sure enough, they came away wet. ‘Oh. I er… I got some shampoo in my eye when I was in the shower. It made my eyes sting, you know what that’s like.’ ‘Does it hurt when you turn your blue eyes off?’ he asked, far too observant. ‘No, not at all.’ ‘Is everything blue when you look through them?’ ‘No. It’s just normal.’ ‘I like you with green ones better.’ ‘So do I,’ I admitted. Unfortunately, Charlie and I were in the minority. The fact he’d already picked up on the two different sides of me and made the connection with the eye colour left me wanting another shower. How much longer did I have before Charlie learned the truth of what I did? ‘Why don’t you keep the green ones switched on then?’ Good question. Too good. ‘I um…’ While I might despise the girl with the blue eyes, she was strong and fearless. She got noticed, unlike the real me. The guys couldn’t get enough of her and no one dared to confront her—except for Virginia and her posse—so she was the perfect front to hide the shy, frightened green-eyed girl behind. Charlie waited, staring up into my eyes. Would he understand that I only behaved that way to protect myself from any more hurt? Would he still love me and stick around or would he too disown me? Without him to keep me grounded, the green-eyed girl would surely be gone for ever.
An Interview with Anabelle Bryant!
Over the coming weeks I have interviews with some of my favourite authors! They each write different genres, so you’ll certainly find some new books to add to your TBR pile! First up we have Anabelle Bryant!
1. What genre do you write?
I write historical romance, Regency, England 1817. Everything about this time period fascinates me, except perhaps the plumbing and lack of solidified chocolate. Otherwise, I’m good. I love the fashion, etiquette, and courting customs associated with aristocracy. Call me when the time machine is ready.
2. Can you tell us about your latest book?
The final book in my debut trilogy is set to be released in early 2015. If you read To Love A Wicked Scoundrel or Duke of Darkness, you have met the hero of my new novel, Phineas Betcham, Viscount Fenhurst. He is a good-hearted boxer that is accustomed to helping everyone except himself…especially when it comes to the secret he holds locked in his heart.
3. Who is your favourite character and why?
I fall in love with my heroes, so in a way I think that makes me rather fickle, moving from one novel to the other. Right now I have started a new trilogy and the hero has definitely stolen my heart. Looking back, I think Devlin of Duke of Darkness, was my favorite.
4. Do you plot or just write and see where your characters take you?
I am not a plotter. I have a general idea in my head and am usually inspired by a small detail. Then my novel grows around that initial idea. I let the characters develop their own voices and idiosyncrasies and then write as the scenes come alive through the actions of my characters. They definitely tell me where the story needs to go.
5. When your favourite time to write?
Writing time is scarce. I am a full time educator and too busy for my own good. I grab writing time whenever the opportunity arises, but morning would be my chosen time to write. The ideas are fresh and I’m ready to spend the day with my novel.
6. Which writers inspire you?
I have an assortment of favorites. Some from years ago when I started reading historical romance: Kathleen Woodiwiss, Lisa Kleypas, Johanna Lindsey; and other newer favorites like Eloisa James, Sherry Thomas and Loretta Chase.

Today I’ll interview my character, Lil, from Christmas Wedding at the Gingerbread Café which is being released on Wednesday!
What is the name of your character?
Lily-Ella Riley.
Is he/she fictional or a historic person?
She’s fictional.
When and where is the story set?
It’s actually a trilogy, and the books begin Christmas 2013 and end Christmas 2014. They’re set in a real town called Ashford, Connecticut.
What should we know about him/her?
Lily loves to bake. No matter what life throws at her, she’ll always have cooking as a comfort. She’s about to get married to Damon, who is truly one if the nicest men around, but her wedding isn’t going to go exactly as planned…
What is the main conflict? What messes up his/her life?
In the third book, Christmas Wedding at the Gingerbread Café, the main conflict is someone is trying to destroy Lil’s wedding before she’s even had a chance to walk down the aisle. This tests her love with Damon, and the café and wedding are thrown in to chaos.
What is the personal goal of the character?
Lil’s main goal is simple. She wants to be happy. She wants children of her own one day, and she wants to continue running her café no matter how hard it is to make money. Her love for Damon and his daughter Charlie is what spurs her on these days, but she’s also got a group of loyal best friends who’d do anything for her.
Is there a working title for this novel, and can we read more about it?

Find out what Katie Oliver ‘sees’ when she writes!
Today I’m excited to welcome Katie Oliver to the blog to talk about her upcoming release Prada and Plaid. I can’t wait to read this book! If you follow the blog you’ll remember Katie discussing the Dating Mr Darcy series before. If you haven’t read them you should!
Your Dating Mr. Darcy trilogy is about to become six books! Are the story lines all linked?
The Dating Mr Darcy series started with one book, Prada and Prejudice, about clueless but well-meaning heiress Natalie Dashwood, and her effort to save the family department store from closure. She joins forces with irascible (but gorgeous) business consultant, Rhys Gordon, and it’s definitely not a match made in heaven – at least, not at first!
As I peopled the story with Natalie’s friends and family, I realized that I liked the characters and I wanted to write more books about them. So I did. I ended up with Love and Liability and Mansfield Lark.
While the Darcy books feature many of the same characters and are loosely connected, they stand alone as well. The next three books in the series promise plenty of romance, danger, Louboutins (of course!), and comedy – and most importantly, more Rhys and Natalie.
Can you share any secrets about the next story, Prada and Plaid?
I’ll let you in on a big secret – Prada and Plaid is my favourite book thus far. I know a mom isn’t supposed to love one of her brood more than the others, but I really enjoyed writing this book. The Scottish highlands…a castle…Christmas…a family secret…the ideas and plotlines came so fast and so furiously that my fingers flew over the keyboard.
Nevertheless, it took me longer to write this book than the others. I was still working full time when I wrote it, and a lot of things happened in those nine months. But I was determined to finish it…even if it meant getting up earlier and spending every Saturday at my laptop.
I think I like Prada and Plaid so much because writing it helped keep me sane during those crazy months. I found myself caught up in my characters’ lives, sharing their heartaches and laughter and secrets. I was able to forget about all the other stuff – i.e., real life and my own problems – for a while. It’s a book I’m really proud of and one I hope everyone enjoys reading as much as I enjoyed writing it.
When you wrote the first book did you have any idea you’d eventually write six?
No! I wrote Prada and Prejudice and had no plans to write another book. I didn’t think I could come up with another idea, much less another book. But about halfway through, I thought, Holly James needs her own story. And what about Dominic, the out-of-control rock star? Why is he estranged from his father? What happened to cause their rift? And answering those questions led to the next two books.
I started Prada when my contract at work ended. I had a couple of months before the new contract started, and not much to do – so I took out a legal pad from my desk drawer (there’s nothing more enticing to a writer than a blank legal pad!) and started jotting down some ideas, and…well, that’s how it began.
Who is your favourite writer?
Oh, no question – I’ve always admired Daphne du Maurier. Every book she wrote is brilliant, each one is a perfect, flawless gem of plotting and characterization. Rebecca is a classic, and it’s probably her best-known work – made all the more compelling because the main character, Maxim de Winter’s second wife, is never named. Yet I identified with her from the first page, and rooted for her to win her husband’s love.
Her other books – Jamaica Inn, The Scapegoat, The House on the Strand to name a few – are also excellent. They’re stories I return to, again and again, like revisiting old friends.
When you write do you ‘see’ the story like a movie reel running through your mind?
You mean other people do that, too? I thought I was the only one! I definitely do visualize my stories. I picture certain actors and actresses as characters in my mind, and it’s their faces and their voices I see and hear as I write.
Do you plot or are you pantser?
Before I write, I need to know (1) what the opening scene will be, (2) what problem and conflicts the main character(s) will face, and (3) how it will end. So in that sense, I’m a plotter. (That makes me sound very Machiavellian, heh-heh-heh.)
But everything that happens in between the beginning of a story and ‘The End’ is open to possibility. So in that sense, I’m a pantser.
As long as I have a general idea of what the story’s about and where it’s going to end up, and as long as there’s plenty of strong conflict, then the rest unfolds as I write. Writing in this way really gives me the best of both worlds.
What are you working on now?
I’m finishing the final Dating Mr Darcy book, Prada in New York.
Rhys and Natalie find themselves in New York as Rhys prepares to open the first American branch of Dashwood & James department store in Manhattan. Natalie wants to help, but Rhys has all the help he needs – from Darcy, his super-efficient (and sexy) new personal assistant.
Holly James comes to New York when Jamie, her fiancé, opens an American branch of his restaurant in midtown Manhattan. Holly’s less than thrilled to learn that his new sous chef, Catherine, can gut a fish in two minutes, roast a perfect leg of lamb – and she’s beautiful, to boot.
Meanwhile, Manhattan’s elusive “Top Cat” burglar is stealing priceless jewels and leaving a Top Cat chocolate bar behind as his calling card at every scene. The police have no leads and no suspects. The burglar’s thefts become personal when a portrait of Natalie’s father is stolen from their apartment. Nat is outraged, and sets out to get the painting back.
But getting to the bottom of the mystery just might land her in serious trouble…
Who is your favourite character out of your books?
Well, I must admit, I do love Rhys. He lets a few choice words fly now and then, and he’s got the devil’s own temper; but he’s also loyal, hardworking, ambitious, passionate – and Scottish. Enough said.
Where can we find you?

Katie Oliver loves romantic comedies, characters who “meet cute,” Richard Curtis films, and Prosecco (not necessarily in that order). She currently resides in northern Virginia with her husband and three parakeets, in a rambling old house with uneven floors and a dining room that leaks when it rains.
Katie has been writing since she was eight, and has a box crammed with (mostly unfinished) novels to prove it. With her sons grown and gone, she decided to get serious and write more (and hopefully, better) stories. She even finishes most of them.
