Friend and fellow Carina author Katie Oliver has graciously passed the baton on for our Monday Blog posts. So here goes, bear with me while I run and type, totally doable…

FYI Carina UK romance authors are also running a “We ♥ Romance” Valentine’s event beginning 1 February and lasting through Valentine’s Day, with blogs and Tweets (#WeLoveRomance) from Carina UK writers. We’ll be sharing excerpts from our books, talking about our favorite romance novels, TV shows, and films, and – best of all – hosting a giveaway! The lucky grand-prize winner will receive a free ebook from each of the participating authors. That’s a lot of fabulous ebooks.

What am I currently working on?

Now that depends on which me you’re talking to…confused yet? I write heartwarming romance under my real name, Rebecca Raisin, and pulpy satire under the name Billie Jones.
Rebecca (this is weird, the whole third person thing) has just finished a follow up book to Christmas at the Gingerbread Café. It’s another novella, carrying on the with same characters and what they’ve been up to since Christmas. Even though it’s a sequel, it can be read as stand-alone. And one warning…have chocolate at the ready if you plan on reading this one, which will be available in March.
Billie, my sun loving alter ego, has just released spoof story Snake Typhoon! It’s fast paced, action/adventure, comedy. So next on the list is writing another of these because I just love the man character Kez, and the way she handles herself in a disaster.

How does my work differ from others in its genre?

For my heartwarming romance, I like writing about food and love. Hence the setting of the Gingerbread Café! I try to write characters you’ll empathise with, or can see them as someone you’d be friends with. Of course there’s usually a baddie to throw a spanner in the works!
For my pulpy fiction, it’s just a crazy adventure where there are no rules! And I think unique in the fact Snake Typhoon doesn’t fit in any particular genre. It’s a bit of a mash up of action/adventure, comedy, and spoof, with a lot of out of the ordinary things taking place.

Why do I write what I do?

An idea will spring to mind and then I’m compelled to go with it. It’s fun switching between genres, and trying new styles simply to see if it will work and I can do it. With the Gingerbread books, when I finished the first one I missed the characters, I felt so invested in their lives, so it was such a treat to go back and write about them again.
And I’m feeling like that now with Kez, and Cindii from Snake Typhoon!

How does my writing process work?

I write in a manic, fast way for the first draft. It’s like I just need to get the bones of the story down, and see if it’s viable. Then I slowly go back and flesh it out, and I really enjoy that part of the process.
I’m going to pass the baton to the uber cool Portia MacIntosh (I bet she can run in high heels and talk to you) who will post on February 3rd.
